History of Walla Walla Pioneer Park Walla Walla’s 47-acre Pioneer Park contains many state-record trees. The park saw its beginning on March 5, 1901. John C. Olmstead, the architect who was also responsible for the design of New York City’s Central Park, arrived in Walla Walla in 1906 and surveyed the city, giving a report that would later influence both the establishment and design of Walla Walla’s first city parks. Living room view of park Pioneer Park Gazebo and Aviary The gazebo in Pioneer Park is a beautiful city landmark that was built in 1910. It is a popular site for open-air music performances throughout the summer. One of the duck ponds at the park The Aviary is home to approximately 200 exotic birds. Best viewing times are while the caretaker is feeding, and during the spring, when the males are in full color. The waterfowl reside in two large net-covered pond enclosures that are easily accessible for viewing by walking along a paved pathway.
